Sustainable hoki fishery ‘Great for New Zealand’

‘Great for New Zealand' is how the Deepwater Group of fishing companies describes the re-certification of the Hoki fishery by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) , said the group's Chief Executive George Clement.

"We're pleased, but not surprised, that the highest independent conservation standards body in the world has agreed to re-certify the hoki fishery. This is all about focusing on long term sustainability. It's important to be audited and it's very, very pleasing to pass that test."

Mr Clement said that the industry is doing the right thing. We have made cuts to catches, we've voluntarily closed more than 30% of our EEZ to bottom trawling, we're very committed to sustainably managing our fisheries, he said.

"If we didn't use our extensive knowledge and common-sense about fishing, we wouldn't gain the important eco-labelling of the MSC."

Industry has to watch the fishery, manage their methods and approach and, fundamentally, that's exactly what we're doing, Mr Clement said.

"We will not be resting on our laurels. We can't afford to do that. There's always room for improvement, but the world can be confident about the sustainability of New Zealand hoki," Mr Clement said.

"Certification is evidence of care and responsibility being practiced by the industry to manage fisheries realistically and effectively balance the needs for sustainable use," he said.
