NZ Seafood Industry Charter

The Seafood Industry has developed its own charter to enshrine its role and responsibilities as a:

Bountiful waters, strong communities, successful seafood businesses

  • valued contributor to the New Zealand economy
  • responsible manager of marine resources, sustainably harvested and farmed to produce food for New Zealanders and the world
  • responsible custodian of the marine environment
  • socially responsible business sector striving to apply world's best practice.
The Seafood Industry Charter commits the Parties to:
  1. Pursue sound, science based fisheries, aquaculture and environmental management practices developed with the participation of all groups with a stake in the marine environment;
  2. Supply quality, healthful, safe, seafood products to New Zealanders and customers round the world;
  3. Respect the rights, interests and opportunities of all with a stake in the marine environment;
  4. Promote secure, enforceable marine farming and harvest rights because they provide the strongest incentive to enhance and use marine resources sustainably;
  5. Comply with New Zealand and international laws and regulations and support enforcement to safeguard resources and rights;
  6. Support international trade rules that ensure open and fair market access;
  7. Work co-operatively with Government to achieve mutually supportive, rights based, sustainable results;
  8. Encourage people in the industry to obtain the skills required for today's demands and train for tomorrow's innovations;
  9. Achieve competitive returns on assets that reward the risks involved in sustainably utilising marine resources.
Industry signatories are committed to:
  • Using the Charter as a day to day guide for their businesses
  • Reporting to shareholders and stakeholders their performance using the Charter commitments as the benchmark
  • Working co-operatively with other seafood industry businesses, including Commercial Stakeholder Organisations, the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council, and TOKM, to develop and implement policy programmes, industry codes and practices that reinforce the Charter.
