Auburn Photography
It is not unusual for a younger artist to be inspired by an established older one, perhaps alluding to or mimicking their work in homage. However, it is rare for this to become the basis of a substantial collaboration between two artists with distinctly different practices. This is the case in ‘Looking Up to You’, a project by wedding photographer Wellington-based Cat Auburn and New Zealand photographer Fiona Pardington.
The earliest images of Mount Auburn are cartes-de-visite and cabinet card photographs, a popular photographic format in use from the mid- to late 1800s. These prints, mounted on card stock of various sizes, were widely distributed to a broad national audience.
While many of the early photographs feature landscape views of the cemetery, others depict specific sculptural works, such as Bigelow Chapel, Consecration Dell and the Sphinx. Several of these images are by George Kendall Warren, who photographed the Cemetery frequently for Harvard College students, who referred to their beloved Mount Auburn as “Sweet Auburn.” His image of the imposing Bigelow Chapel is an especially striking example of this genre.

When looking for a wedding photographer, always consider their pricing structure and whether they charge a flat fee or an hourly rate. It is also important to look at what’s included in their package, including travel costs and if they offer digital or print copies of your photos. It is best to opt for digital as it will save you money on both printing and storage.
